In northwestern Peru is located Chulucanas, a town in Piura Region. This is a small but famous town, well-known for its pottery, which represents its main business activity.
Ancient pre-Hispanic techniques used by the Tallán and Vicus cultures such as “Paleteo” and “Negative” are still used by Chulucanas potters. With the paleteo technique, potters shape the clay with their hands and then beat it with a paddle; and the negative one consists in putting the piece into the smoking oven for a reduction burning to make the ceramic darker and to get the typical brightness of Chulucanas pottery.
Chulucanas potteries’ designs are varied; they represent traditions, lifestyles (chicha vendors, musicians and dancers), animals, etc. The predominated colors are black and white. However, nowadays potters have taken on new forms, designs, colors and tones without leaving out their ancestral techniques.
Their ceramic products are famed internationally, and although they use ancient craft methods, they are of high quality.
These ceramics are unique and very beautiful, as this vase shown here.
